Frisco Blues

So I spent most of last weekend in the city, trying to catch as much of the 32nd San Francisco Blues Festival as I could. It began with me taking Friday off from work (yay!) so that I could drive down to the Justin Herman Plaza (which appeared to be a stack of large concrete blocks turned into a fountain of some sort, at least from where I was standing; I'm sure it looked pretty from elsewhere...) where the Blues Fest was kicked off by means of a free West Coast Harp Jump, featuring Bay Area Harmonica gurus, Gary Smith, Dave Barrett, Paul Durkett and Big Bones. Unfortunately, my poor navigation and parking skills caused me to miss the first performer, who happens to be my instructor, Dave Barrett. Gary Smith more than made up for that with some blazing harp solos. And Big Bones put on a vocal display that made Barry White sound like Frankie Valli. And of course, everyone got together in the end, for one final harp showdown. Sweet !:D

Unfortunately, Friday was perhaps the most fun I had at the festival.

The entire day I spent there on Sunday was satisfactory at best, what with all the overpriced food, overpriced rental chairs, overpriced souvenirs, oversized people, overheated festival grounds and underpowered speakers. And we couldn't leave the arena without having to pay to get back in again.

Oh and there was that one lady holding a tray of chicken kababs while standing in line for the restrooms. Yes, she took the plate in with her. No, I didn't stick around to see if she still had them when she walked out. Ugh. :-/

I did hear solid performances from the British Blues All Stars (especially Long John Baldry) and the harmonica great, Charlie Musselwhite.

Buddy Guy and Carlos Santana, the highlights of the show, most unfortunately, seemed more interested in talking, mumbling, "showing love", screaming into the crowd and engaging in all kinds of random showmanship than playing any real music, and we therefore decided to call it quits early. Too bad. I hope Buddy Guy didn't rock the house right after we left. I will never know ...

All in all, a good experience. Chicago's next on my list...

Got Regis?

Caught a glimpse of Regis whoring himself on TV late last night, trying to sell copies of his latest music CD; YES you read it right, MUSIC CD: When You're Smiling.

For those of you who suffer the misfortune of owning Kathy Lee Gifford's crapola masterpiece, Gentle Grace, this oughtta complete the set.
